Clarity on recent media references to "Metropolitan"
You may have seen social media posts about statements made during the testimony by Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala at the Parliamentary ad hoc committee investigating police corruption. Mr Matlala’s statement alleges that Metropolitan Health offered or made payments to secure or retain a previous contract with the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Firstly, it’s important to clarify that there are several distinct businesses under the broader Metropolitan brand. Each serves different client needs, from life insurance to healthcare administration, and operates with its own leadership, governance, and regulatory frameworks. This structure reflects the scale and expertise of our organisation. Metropolitan Health is part of the group’s healthcare administration business, distinct from Metropolitan Life, with its own leadership and governance. Metropolitan Life was not involved in the SAPS contract.
Mr Matlala also said that he fears the person who owns Metropolitan. Social media posts are linking this statement to Peter Tshiguvho, who is Metropolitan Life’s CEO. The management of a company does not own the company. While responsible for overall strategy, management of the company and stakeholder engagement, Peter is not ‘the owner of Metropolitan’, nor does he participate in tender preparation nor in any activities intended to influence contracting decisions.
While our businesses operate with dedicated leadership and governance, we are united by shared purpose, values and high standards. It is also important to note that Metropolitan Health refuted these allegations as completely unfounded and entirely false. Metropolitan Health responded that it has always conducted its business to the highest standards of governance and integrity and this conduct was upheld throughout their tenure on the SAPS contract. They have confirmed that no payments were made, offered, solicited, or requested, and no favours were suggested or granted by Metropolitan Health in relation to the SAPS contract. Metropolitan Health has also stated that they will fully cooperate with any lawful inquiry or investigation in this regard.
