Who can be covered?

You, or you and your:

  • Life partner
  • Children
  • Life partner and children

If you choose to cover your children, this includes all your children. Any future children, are automatically covered under this plan up to age 21.

Your life partner is your husband or wife according to:

  • the laws of any sovereign country; customary or tribal law;
  • any widely recognised religion that is practiced in South Africa;
  • or the person living with you, for at least six months, who is accepted by the community as your husband or wife.

Your No-Lapse Funeral Plan questions answered
Do I have to pay every month?

No. There are no fixed monthly premiums. You top up any amount, any time. The minimum amount to start your plan is R200.

When does my cover start?

Your cover starts as soon as we receive your first payment. Waiting periods apply for death due to natural causes. 

Are there waiting periods?

Yes, a 6-month waiting period applies for death due to natural causes. However, in this unfortunate event, we will pay back the payments made so far for this insured life. No waiting period applies for death due to accidental causes.

Who can I cover on this plan?

You, as the plan owner, must always be covered on this plan. When you purchase the plan, you can choose to add your life partner and/or your children. You and your life partner are covered for life.  All your children, including any future children, are automatically covered under this plan up to age 21.

Is everyone on the plan covered for the same amount?

Yes, you have one cover amount on the plan that each person is covered for. 

For example, if you and your life partner are covered, and the cover amount on the plan is R10 000, then we will pay R10 000 on a valid claim for yourself and another R10 000 on a valid claim for your life partner. By law, claims for children under 6 years old will be limited to a maximum of R20 000 and for children between the ages of 6 and 14 to a maximum of R50 000.

How do I claim and how quickly are claims paid?

The easiest way to claim is on WhatsApp – 0860 724 724. If your claim is valid and you send us all the required documents, we aim to pay claims within 4 hours. 

How do I cover extended family members?

Each plan is designed to cover yourself, your life partner and your children. If you would like to cover an extended family member, you can help them to sign up for a plan themselves. Once  they have signed up for a plan, you are welcome to help them grow their cover by making payments on their behalf.  

Remember that they will need to meet the requirements for a new plan, such as being younger than the maximum age.

What if I don’t reach R1500 within 12 months?

You get cover from your very first payment of at least R200. But, unfortunately, this plan has a minimum of R1500 payment in total, so if you are unable to reach it after 12 months, your plan will end. Metropolitan will, however, refund 60% of your payments made. Or you can choose to try again and use the 60% to start a new plan in the following year. 

What if someone on my plan is too old when I make a top-up?

The plan owner needs to be younger than 65 years old and your life partner, if insured on the plan, needs to be younger than 75 years old to make top-ups. If this is not the case, the cover amount on this plan can no longer increase. If one of these insured lives are too old but you want to grow cover for the other person, you have the option to purchase an additional plan, covering only that person. 

Can I cancel and get my money back?

If you change your mind about this plan in the first 31 days after the start date, you can cancel and Metropolitan will pay back your full payment made – as long as you haven’t claimed a benefit or any insured life on the plan has passed away.  

After the 31 days have passed, you can still cancel your plan, but this is not recommended since you will not get any money back and you can keep your cover with no future payments required. If you make a top-up payment on your plan and change your mind in the first 31 days after the payment, Metropolitan will also refund this top-up, reverse your increase in cover, but your plan will remain active. 

How do referrals work?

After you make your first payment, Metropolitan sends you a unique referral code. When someone you refer applies for their own plan and gives Metropolitan your code, you earn a reward every time they make a payment. 

Your reward is a top‑up to your own plan equal to 5% of the payment they make, which increases your cover permanently — just like your own top‑up payments would. The more people you refer, and the more they pay over time, the more top‑ups you receive. 

Remember: you must reach total payments of R1500 in your first 12 months to secure your plan for life.
